An armed attack has been carried out on the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. During the attack, in which 3 terrorists were neutralized, 2 police officers were injured. Currently, investigations into the incident are being conducted by the police and the prosecutor's office.
According to information released by the Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs, the individuals who carried out the attack were Yunus E.S, Onur. Ç, and Enes.Ç.
According to the Ministry's information, it has been determined that Yunus E.S, who was captured dead, had connections with a terrorist organization exploiting religion, and that the other two terrorists captured injured – Onur Ç. and Enes Ç. – are brothers, with Onur Ç. having a criminal record related to narcotics.
Turkish security expert Abdullah Ağar commented on the incident to Modern.az.
The expert noted that it is not excluded that what happened is part of broader plans:
"It is probable that the individuals involved in the attack have connections with a criminal organization that exploits religious motives. This is a model where ideological and criminal elements combine, and such “hybrid actors” increase the risk of unpredictability. Although the tactical clothing and semi-professional weapons used during the attack indicate a certain level of preparation, full professionalism was not observed in their behavior. This strengthens the possibility that a non-professional cell, albeit one that has received some guidance, exists. The main objective of such attacks is to create a high and disproportionate impact with low financial investment. These types of terrorist actions are also aimed at deepening religious and sectarian sensitivities and activating existing “fault lines” within society. It is not excluded that what happened is part of broader plans. I hope I am wrong, but this could be evaluated as a test attack or a piece of a larger chain, and an initial signal of major objectives.”
The expert also drew attention to the increasing risks in the region:
“We are already on the brink of a deeper confrontation. We observe various – including linear and asymmetrical – tests being conducted on Turkey and Azerbaijan. The purpose of these attacks is not only to strike but also to influence society and decision-makers.”
