Regarding Ekrem İmamoğlu, the imprisoned mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the "insulting prosecutors case" was dismissed before the trial began.
Modern.az reports that İmamoğlu paid the damages through his lawyers.
According to the indictment, İmamoğlu was to be prosecuted for the words he uttered against prosecutors during his testimony in court on March 23, under the article “public insult of an official due to their duty,” with a demand for up to 4 years and 1 month in prison and a political ban. He was scheduled to appear before the judge on October 22.
However, the court decision stated that, according to Article 75 of the Turkish Penal Code, the indictment against İmamoğlu falls under the procedure of closing the case by paying a certain amount without going to trial. Since İmamoğlu paid the determined amount on time, the court dismissed the case.
The decision also noted that the parties have the right to appeal to the Istanbul Court of Appeals within two weeks.
