Today, presidential elections are being held in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

Modern.az, referring to Turkish media, reports that voting began at 08:00 local time and will continue until 18:00.

For the presidential post, the current head of state, Ersin Tatar, is running as an independent candidate.

Tufan Erhürman, Mehmet Hasgüler, Arif Salih Kırdağ, Ahmet Boran, İbrahim Yazıcı, and Osman Zorba are also presidential candidates. Another candidate, Hüseyin Gürlek, withdrew his candidacy in favor of Ersin Tatar one day before the voting.

The main struggle is predicted to be between Ersin Tatar, who supports the independence of the TRNC, and Tufan Erhürman, who supports a federation. Tufan Erhürman is the presidential candidate of the Republican Turkish Party and was also Ersin Tatar's opponent in the 2020 elections.

For any of the candidates to win in the first round, they need to secure 50% + 1 vote. If none of the candidates secures the required votes, a second round of presidential elections will be held 7 days later.
