In the presidential elections held today in Northern Cyprus, Tufan Erhürman, leader of the Republican People's Party, won. He defeated the incumbent president Ersin Tatar and was elected the new president of Northern Cyprus.
According to Modern.az, Erhürman is 55 years old. He was born in Nicosia, the capital of Northern Cyprus, and is a lawyer by profession.
The politician, a graduate of Ankara University, participated in negotiations on the Cyprus Problem in 2008-2010. From 1999 to 2004, he worked at the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Turkey and played a role in the establishment of the ombudsman institution in Turkey.
He has been a Member of Parliament since 2013, and has been the leader of the Republican Turkish Party since November 13, 2016. On February 2, 2018, he became the Prime Minister of Northern Cyprus.
He also participated as a candidate in the presidential elections held in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in 2020.
He opposes the Turkish government's proposal regarding Northern Cyprus. During his campaign, Erhürman stated that if elected, he would resume official negotiations with the Republic of Cyprus, which were suspended in 2017.
Erhürman claims that a two-state solution is not a realistic approach to end the economic and political isolation of Turkish Cypriots.
