Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that his country has reached an initial agreement on gas supplies from Azerbaijan.
Modern.az reports that he provided this information during a conversation with journalists on Sunday.
According to Zelensky, the discussion concerns supplies that could be implemented in the event of a possible natural gas shortage. The President stated that Kyiv has secured negotiations for gas supplies with a total value of approximately 2 billion dollars, and some financial tranches have already been found.
“Prime Minister Yuliya Sviridenko has achieved positive agreements with Slovakia. Sviridenko and Energy Minister Svetlana Grinchuk have also held negotiations with energy companies in the United States. We know where we can obtain approximately 2 billion dollars worth of gas, should the need arise,” – Zelensky said.
The head of state added that Norway has allocated a grant of 100 million dollars to Ukraine, and another tranche is planned for January next year. Similar financial assistance is expected to be provided by other countries.
“There is an agreement with the United States regarding liquefied natural gas (LNG); if needed, the gas will be brought via the Polish terminal. We can also obtain additional gas from Greece. We have reached an agreement on this with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. There is also an understanding with other countries. An agreement has also been reached with Azerbaijan in this direction,” – Zelensky emphasized.
According to the President, the Ukrainian government is striving to ensure energy security through various sources, and Azerbaijan's designation as one of the important partners in this process is consistent with Kyiv's energy diversification policy.
