At the instruction of US President Donald Trump, the demolition of a part of the White House has begun.
Modern.az reports that, according to "The Washington Post" newspaper, the goal is the construction of a new banquet hall at the President's personal initiative.
According to the information, construction crews have already started the demolition work of the building's east wing. Excavators have been brought to the area, and the sound of the machinery could be heard from the White House courtyard.
Donald Trump had previously stated that the project would not affect the existing building: “It will not interfere with the main building. It will be located next to it, but it will not touch the building”, – he noted during the presentation of the decree he signed in July.
According to officials, the new banquet hall will replace the current east wing. They added that a number of changes had been made to that structure long before Trump came to power.
The President had initially estimated the project's cost at $200 million, but this figure later increased to $250 million. The new hall is reported to have a capacity of 650 people.
