On the morning of October 21, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived at La Santé prison, located in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, on the left bank of the Seine.
Modern.az reports that Sarkozy became the first president in France's post-war history to be held in a penitentiary institution.
On September 25, the former head of state was found guilty on charges of “complicity in a criminal group” in the financing of the Libyan campaign, but was acquitted on counts of concealing the embezzlement of state funds and passive corruption. The court found no evidence of illegal financing of the 2007 election campaign, but sentenced Sarkozy to 5 years in prison.
In an interview with “Le Figaro” newspaper, Sarkozy announced that he would take with him Alexandre Dumas père's two-volume “The Count of Monte Cristo” and Jean-Christian Petitfils' “Jesus: The Life of Christ”.
