Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán will pay an official visit to Rome on October 27.
Modern.az reports that within the framework of the visit, he will meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and will later be received by Pope Leo XIV in Vatican City.
According to the newspaper “Magyar Nemzet”, one of the main topics of discussion at the meeting between Orbán and the Pontiff will be the peaceful resolution of the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Vatican, like Hungary, supports the termination of the conflict through diplomatic means.
The newspaper writes that the meeting will be dedicated to the topics of the war in Ukraine, the peace process, and Christian values. This will be Viktor Orbán's first personal meeting with Pope Leo XIV.
The head of the Hungarian government has maintained close ties with the Vatican before. He has met several times with Pope Francis, the predecessor of Pope Leo XIV. It should be recalled that Pope Francis made an apostolic visit to Hungary in 2023.
According to Hungarian media, Orbán's relations with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are closer and more cordial compared to other European Union leaders. Both leaders exhibit a more conservative approach, differing from Brussels' official stance on a number of issues.
The Ukraine issue is also expected to be one of the main topics of discussion at the meeting.
