“I am very optimistic about what is happening in the South Caucasus, in US-Azerbaijan relations.”
Modern.az reports that these words were stated by Luke Coffey, a leading expert at the Hudson Institute. He noted that it is high time to bring new attention and energy to bilateral relations.
“The meeting at the White House on August 8 with the participation of President Trump is a new starting point for these relations. I believe that the US and Azerbaijan have common interests in many areas such as economy, business, trade, energy, and security. I hope that we will witness closer cooperation between the two countries from now on,” he added.
The expert noted that one of the most important and at the same time easiest steps to elevate these relations to the next level would be a visit by President Trump to Azerbaijan.
“No US president has yet visited Azerbaijan. At the same time, it would be very good if Secretary of State Rubio also visited. The last time the then US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited Azerbaijan was in 2012. Thus, the most urgent step that can be taken is to initiate visits to the region and for the two leaders to come together and determine the most appropriate way to develop these relations,” Luke Coffey stated.
