Tbilisi City Court ordered the pre-trial detention of Koba Gabunia, former Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.
Modern.az reports that Gabunia is accused of abusing his official powers.
According to the indictment, he illegally favored “Lagi Capital” LLC and paid an advance for the project. It is reported that the company did not spend the advance funds received in 2023 for their intended purpose, and the construction of the kindergarten was not completed. As a result, it is alleged that the state suffered material damage.
The prosecutor stated that Gabunia is not cooperating with the investigation and only arrest can prevent him from obstructing the investigation. The defense did not agree with this argument and offered 400,000 lari as bail.
Gabunia stated in court that he never received any material benefit, he might have overlooked some details due to the multitude of projects, but his actions were not intentional.
According to the investigative service of the Ministry of Finance, Gabunia was detained during an operation conducted jointly with the State Security Service. Searches were conducted at approximately 20 addresses in connection with the case, which also involves former minister Irakli Karseladze.
