The European Union, Ukraine, and Canada will organize a summit of the international coalition for the return of Ukrainian children, which should be a top priority on the global agenda.
According to **Modern.az**, this was stated by European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen against the backdrop of talks that began in Geneva regarding the US peace plan for the Russia-Ukraine war.
"Among all the horrors created by Russia's war, none affects us as deeply. Tens of thousands of children are still in Russian captivity. We will not rest until each of them returns to their homes, to their families," the EC head emphasized, adding that this issue must be a key element of the agreement.
Von der Leyen noted that any credible and lasting peace plan must, first and foremost, put an end to killings and military operations, and must not create grounds for future conflicts.
She specifically highlighted three elements of lasting peace. Firstly, the impossibility of changing borders by force; secondly, no restrictions on the Ukrainian Armed Forces – as this weakens Ukraine and undermines European security. Thirdly, the recognition of the European Union's central role in ensuring peace in Ukraine.
"Ukraine has chosen the European path. This begins with the country's reconstruction, integration into our single market and defense industrial base, and ultimately culminates in joining the European Union," the EC head added.
Von der Leyen concluded by stating that Europe, together with Ukraine, member states, the "coalition of the willing," and the US, will continue its work to achieve real progress on the path to peace.
