While claims regarding possible links between Israel's foreign intelligence service Mossad and American financier Jeffrey Epstein continue to remain on the agenda, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has commented on the issue for the first time.
Modern.az, citing foreign media, reports that the prime minister, in his statement, directed attention towards former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.
At a time when the Epstein documents have generated widespread international resonance, Israel has for the first time taken an official stance on this controversy, regarding which it had long remained silent. Benjamin Netanyahu stated that claims of Epstein acting on behalf of Israeli intelligence are unfounded and emphasized that these claims are deliberately being brought into the political sphere.
Netanyahu noted that the claims that “Epstein worked for Mossad” aim to overshadow Epstein's serious criminal cases in the US and create a false political perception.
The prime minister's main target of criticism was former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Netanyahu drew attention to the existence of an “unusually close” relationship between Epstein and Barak. However, he emphasized that this closeness does not prove that Epstein acted on behalf of the State of Israel or its intelligence structures.
In his statement, Netanyahu accused Ehud Barak of attempting to undermine Israeli democracy for many years. According to him, “Barak, unable to recover from the impact of an election defeat that occurred more than twenty years ago, is cooperating with anti-Zionist radical left-wing forces with the aim of overthrowing the elected Israeli government.”
