Ukraine supports the initiative of the Vatican and Italy to declare a ceasefire during the Winter Olympic Games, as well as the UN resolution reflecting this call.
Modern.az reports that Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha stated this in an interview with Reuters.
According to the minister, Kyiv is interested in a ceasefire during the Olympic Games from February 6 to 22 and awaits Russia's clear position on this matter.
“We support this call. We are interested in a ceasefire, and if Russia rejects this proposal again, it will once again show who is hindering peace and who wants to continue this war,” Sybiha emphasized.
He added that a temporary ceasefire could pave the way for broader peace talks.
Previously, Pope Leo XIV, referring to the ancient tradition of the “Olympic truce,” called on high-ranking officials to take real steps towards de-escalation and dialogue. The Pontiff stated that in a world hungry for peace, there is a need for tools that can stop the abuse of power, the display of force, and indifference to the rule of law.
