The US company Amazon has built a record-sized data center campus in the St. Joseph region of Indiana state with the aim of supporting artificial intelligence technologies.
Modern.az reports that the initial phase of the project is valued at approximately 11 billion dollars, and this facility is considered one of the most ambitious technological investments in the company's history.
According to information, the complex named “Project Rainier” started operations in the autumn of 2025 and is primarily intended for the development and operation of artificial intelligence models.
Energy Demand at an Unprecedented Level
The total power capacity of the data center campus is estimated at approximately 2.2 gigawatts. This is considered equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 1.5–1.6 million households and is cited as one of the main reasons for the rapid increase in energy demand in the US. Dozens of large server buildings are being constructed within the framework of the project, and it is planned that nearly 30 facilities will be operational when the complex is fully completed.
Economic Impact for the Region
According to the Indiana authorities' statement, this investment is one of the largest capital investments in the state's history and is expected to create thousands of new jobs. Furthermore, Amazon also plans to invest an additional 15 billion dollars to establish more data centers in the region.
A Strategic Step in the Artificial Intelligence Race
Experts note that this type of large-scale computing infrastructure is one of the key factors for technology giants to strengthen their global competitiveness in the field of artificial intelligence. In AWS's new complex, thousands of servers and specialized artificial intelligence chips are deployed, ensuring the operation of large-scale models.
Energy and Infrastructure Issues
Since the operation of data centers of this scale requires a large energy supply, local energy companies are implementing projects worth billions of dollars to build new electricity generation and transmission infrastructure. Amazon's giant artificial intelligence data center in Indiana is considered one of the strategic projects that enhance the technological power of the US, and larger computing complexes are expected to be built in the future.
