Russia has lost approximately 1.3 million military personnel since the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine. Around 350,000 of them have been killed.
Modern.az reports that these figures were disclosed on February 11 during a briefing held at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
According to the official's claim, the Russian army has suffered approximately 400,000 dead and wounded in 2025 alone.
A NATO representative stated that the proportion of those killed among Russian casualties is unusually high. According to him, this is due to the widespread use of unmanned aerial vehicles in combat operations, poor medical provision at the front, and the use of tactics that require significant manpower losses.
The official did not disclose specific figures regarding the Ukrainian army's casualties. However, he stated that the total number of dead and wounded in the conflict exceeds 2.2 million.
It was noted that approximately 700,000 Russian and 400,000 Ukrainian military personnel are currently on the front line. The NATO representative stated that the 7-to-4 ratio is far from the 3-to-1 ratio traditionally considered necessary for a large-scale offensive.
At the same time, it was emphasized that Ukraine is experiencing difficulties in terms of personnel mobilization and retention. Russia, however, still possesses broader human resources that it can send to the front.
Another high-ranking NATO official stated that it took the Russian army more than 20 months to cover a distance of less than 50 kilometers from Bakhmut to Pokrovsk. This represents an advance of less than 100 meters per day, and during that period, Russia suffered 300,000 dead and wounded.
The Alliance does not expect the front line in Donetsk Oblast to collapse within the next year and a half. However, officials stated that it is difficult to make predictions for a longer-term perspective.
