A diplomatic scandal has erupted between Belgium and the United States.
Modern.az reports that the US Ambassador to Belgium, Bill White, was summoned to the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for accusing local authorities of antisemitism.
Belgium's Foreign Minister, Maxim Prevot, described the ambassador's statements as “insulting and violating diplomatic norms”.
The scandal is related to an investigation into three Jewish religious practitioners in Antwerp for performing circumcisions without medical training and official licenses. According to Belgian legislation, such medical procedures can only be performed with appropriate qualifications and authorization.
In three messages shared on social media, the ambassador called the investigation “antisemitic persecution” and a “ridiculous step”. He also tagged high-ranking US officials in his posts. This caused dissatisfaction in official Brussels and created diplomatic tension between the two countries.
