Trump may send thousands of US troops for ground operations in Iran.
Modern.az reports, citing Reuters, that sources familiar with the matter have stated that the Trump administration is considering sending thousands of troops to the Middle East to conduct ground operations against Iran. They stated that the troops could be used to ensure the safe passage of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. In this case, they would be deployed along the waterway along the Iranian coastline.
The deployment of ground forces to Kharg Island, a major center for Iranian oil exports, is also being considered. One source called such an operation "very risky" due to the possibility of Iranian forces striking the island with drones and missiles. An operation to seize Iran's highly enriched uranium reserves is also being discussed. A White House official stated that "No decision has currently been made regarding the deployment of ground troops, but President Trump is wisely considering all options."
Reuters also notes that Washington was already planning to send a rapid reaction force to the Middle East. This unit consists of more than 2,000 Marines. The total number of American forces in the Middle East is approximately 50,000.
