Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II was not allowed to travel to Tbilisi to attend the funeral service of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II.
Modern.az reports that lawyer Ara Zohrabyan stated this on social media.
The Catholicos's office received an invitation from the Georgian Patriarchate to participate in the funeral services and liturgy scheduled for March 22. The lawyer, considering the mourning ceremony in the neighboring country, filed a petition for the Catholicos to temporarily travel to attend the ceremony, but received a refusal.
It should be noted that in February, a criminal case was opened against the Catholicos in connection with the dismissal of Gevork Saroyan, the former head of the Masiatsotn diocese. As part of this case, his exit from the country has been prohibited.
It should be recalled that Ilia II passed away on March 17 at the age of 93 in one of Tbilisi's clinics. He will be buried tomorrow - March 22 - at the Sioni Cathedral in Tbilisi.
The new Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia will be elected no sooner than 40 days and no later than two months.
