Britain has abandoned its plan to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
Modern.az reports with reference to foreign media that Great Britain has abandoned its plan to return the Chagos Islands, where Diego Garcia, a strategic British-American military base, is located.
The decision was made after criticism from US President Donald Trump.
A British government spokesman said London had initially conditioned the deal on US support and was not prepared to move forward without Washington's consent.
Trump had previously sharply criticized the initiative, calling it a "great stupidity."
A bill on the transfer of the Indian Ocean archipelago to Mauritius was being considered by the British Parliament, but its fate is now in doubt.
The Chagos Islands are of strategic importance due to the location of Diego Garcia, a key military base used by Great Britain and the United States.
