According to Modern.az, footballer Ramiz Məmmədov, of Azerbaijani origin, made history as the first Azerbaijani to score a goal in the UEFA Champions League group stage with his goal against "Rosenborg" while playing for "Spartak" in 1995.
Who is Ramiz Məmmədov?
Ramiz Məmmədov was born on August 21, 1972, in Moscow. His father, Mehman Məmmədov, is ethnically Azerbaijani, originally from the village of Yuxarı Qarabulaq in Georgia. His mother is ethnically Russian.
Club career
Ramiz Məmmədov is a product of Moscow's “Spartak” club. He played for this team from 1992–1998, becoming Russian champion 5 times.
From 1998–1999, he played for “Arsenal” (Tula) and “Krylia Sovetov” (Samara) clubs. He then moved to “Dynamo Kyiv” club and became the winner of the Ukrainian championship there.
In the 2000-2001 season, he played for Austria's “Sturm Graz” club. In 2002, he signed a contract with “Volgar” club.
In 2003, he returned to Russia and won the championship in the East zone of the Russian Second Division with “Luch-Energiya” club (small gold medal-ed.). After this, he ended his professional football career.
He scored 7 goals in 139 matches in the Russian Premier League.
National team
Ramiz Məmmədov played 10 matches for the Russian national team from 1994-1998. He made his national team debut on August 17, 1994, against the Austrian national team.
He made history as the first player from a First Division club to play for the Russian national team. Specifically, on November 18, 1998, while a player for “Arsenal” (Tula-ed.) club, he participated in a match against the Brazilian national team.
