After the Azerbaijani national team's resounding victory over Saint Lucia yesterday, this country was often presented on social media as a “small and insignificant island nation.” However, the state located in the Caribbean basin possesses quite interesting and unique historical and cultural characteristics.

Modern.az reports that Saint Lucia, which required several flights to reach Azerbaijan, is located in the Caribbean Sea, between Martinique and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Its population is approximately 180,000 people. The country was long an object of struggle between Great Britain and France. Historically, this island even changed hands 14 times. This is why Saint Lucia is sometimes called “the Helen of the West.” In 1979, the country gained independence from Great Britain. Today, it is a member of the United Nations and other international organizations.

The official language in Saint Lucia is English. However, a large part of the population uses the French-derived Creole language “Kweyol” in daily life. This indicates that the country was shaped by both French and English influences.

Economically, Saint Lucia is among the developing countries. The main sources of income are tourism and agriculture. Banana exports, in particular, have played a significant role in the country's economy for many years. In recent years, the tourism sector has gained even more prominence. Although not considered a completely poor country, its economic opportunities are limited, and its dependence on external factors is high.

One of the most striking aspects that distinguishes Saint Lucia is its scientific and literary achievements. There are very few countries in the world that can produce two Nobel laureates with such a small population.

One of them is the economist Arthur Lewis. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1979 for his research on economic models of developing countries. Lewis is particularly known for his “dual-sector model” theory, which has been considered one of the main approaches in development economics for many years.

The other laureate is the poet and playwright Derek Walcott. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992. Walcott's works extensively cover Caribbean culture, colonial past, and identity issues. His oeuvre is regarded as an example demonstrating that a small island nation can have a voice in world literature.

Interestingly, in terms of the number of Nobel laureates relative to its population, Saint Lucia has one of the highest indicators in the world. Two volcanic mountains named “Pitons,” one of the country's symbols, are included in the UNESCO list. Its capital is Castries, where the country's main port is also located. Saint Lucia is also known for its annual jazz festival, which attracts musicians from various countries around the world. Cricket and football are the most popular sports.

Although the Saint Lucia national team has not achieved major successes in the international arena, it competes in the CONCACAF zone. The team primarily participates in regional tournaments and has taken part in competitions such as the Caribbean Cup. Their main strength stems not from a prominent football school, but rather from motivation and physical preparation. In this regard, such teams can sometimes produce unexpected results.

Although Saint Lucia may appear to be a small and distant island nation at first glance, its history, language, culture, and scientific achievements distinguish this country. The Azerbaijani national team's victory against this team is important from a sporting perspective. However, this encounter also provided us with an opportunity to get to know a geographically distant, yet interesting country more closely.
