Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated in his meeting with American Congressman Joe Wilson that Ankara supports the withdrawal of Russian military bases from Syria.

Modern.az reports that Wilson made this statement during hearings held at the Helsinki Commission.

According to the Congressman, Syria's Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheybani emphasized in his conversation with him that the Syrian people, who suffered from Russian aviation strikes during the civil war, would never be friends with Moscow. Wilson noted that despite official Damascus demonstrating new activity in relations with Russia, this reality does not change. Minister Asaad

Wilson also stated that Turkey's increased military presence in northern Syria is in line with US interests, as it naturally limits Russia's influence and leads to its complete expulsion from the region. He also criticized the preference in Israel for Syria to remain in a weak and fragmented state.

According to the Congressman, for Israel to view Russia's expanding military presence as a buffer against Turkey is a “suicidal step”.

Against the backdrop of these statements, a delegation from the Russian Ministry of Defense, led by Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, visited Damascus. According to the Syrian Ministry of Defense, the delegation was received by the country's Chief of General Staff, Ali al-Naasan. It was stated that the visit, which will last several days, is aimed at developing and strengthening military cooperation within the framework of both countries' interests.
