Student protests continue for a second day in a number of universities in Iran.
Modern.az reports that, according to information disseminated by local media and social networks, protests in some higher education institutions were accompanied by clashes. The incidents coincide with a time when Washington is increasing its military presence in the region amidst Iran's nuclear talks with the US.
Iranian state television reported that “individuals appearing as students” attacked a rally of pro-government students in Tehran, and some were injured as a result of stone-throwing. According to videos released by the US-based HRANA human rights group, protests also took place in universities in Mashhad, and the intervention of security forces led to injuries.
Footage released on Saturday shows students of Sharif University of Technology in Tehran chanting slogans against the country's supreme leader Ali Khamenei and making calls in favor of Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of the overthrown shah.
The latest wave of protests began with demonstrations against economic difficulties in December last year and evolved into political slogans. The unrest in January is considered the most serious internal confrontation since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
