The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is exploring options to freeze Iranian assets held within its territory.
Modern.az reports that “The Wall Street Journal” wrote about this, citing sources. It was stated that with this step, the UAE puts official Tehran at risk of losing billions of dollars.
If the UAE takes this step, Iran's access to foreign currency and international trade networks will be significantly restricted. It is reported that UAE officials have already privately informed Iran about their plans. Such measures could cut off "one of Tehran's most vital economic arteries” and restrict its access to global trade networks.
Several sources told the newspaper that, alternatively, UAE authorities are considering implementing special measures to prevent Iran's illicit operations. These include restrictions on local currency exchange involved in money transfer schemes bypassing official banking channels, and freezing the assets of shadowy companies located in the US. The restrictions will target accounts linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (SEPAH).
“The Wall Street Journal” adds that, among other issues, the UAE does not rule out the possibility of seizing Iranian vessels to target the country's shadow fleet. The article also notes that the UAE has long served as a financial hub for Iranian individuals and companies seeking to evade Western sanctions.
It should be recalled that Iran, amidst the US-Israel attack, also struck BB, among other neighboring countries.
The UAE, however, declared that it does not wish to participate in the conflict and does not permit the use of its territory, territorial waters, or airspace for any attack against Iran.
However, the country also stated that it reserves its right to self-defense.
