In the autumn of 2020, the Azerbaijani people wrote one of the most glorious pages of their history – the 44-day Patriotic War. In this war, not only soldiers but also medical workers were on the front lines. They forgot fear to save the lives of wounded soldiers, displayed true heroism, and sacrificed their lives.
During the Patriotic War, they served for days sleepless, exhausted, sometimes under a hail of bullets. The number of wounded was high, and time was short. Every second meant a life.
Many of these doctors either volunteered to go to the front lines or served in the combat zone as part of hospitals and mobile medical units. For them, a white coat was not just a symbol of profession – it was a symbol of the value placed on human life. However, in wartime conditions, their white coats were stained red with blood.
October 6 is International Doctors' Day. Every year, the first Monday of October is celebrated as International Doctors' Day as a sign of solidarity and active cooperation among doctors worldwide. The observance of this day is a joint initiative of the World Health Organization and the international humanitarian organization "Doctors Without Borders".
This date once again commemorates the medical workers who honorably fulfilled their duties during the 44-day Patriotic War.
According to Modern.az, 159 military medical workers were wounded in the Patriotic War, and 44 medical workers heroically martyred while performing their duties. 11 doctors, 7 paramedics, and 26 medical instructors ascended to the peak of martyrdom.
