Tomorrow is International Women's Day. Currently, "March 8" is celebrated as an official holiday in 26 countries worldwide, including Azerbaijan. Last year, 53.1 percent of babies born in Azerbaijan were boys, and 46.9 percent were girls. Additionally, women constitute 50.2 percent of the country's population.
According to data obtained by Modern.az from the State Statistical Committee, 2 million 414 thousand of the employed population in our country are women. The number of employed men is 2 million 615 thousand people. The total number of women in the labor force is 2 million 571 thousand.
The sector where women are most employed is education. Currently, the number of women working under an employment contract is 722,147. Of these, 242,801 are active in the education sector. This indicator constitutes 33.6 percent of salaried female employees. In other words, one out of every three women working under an employment contract is employed in the education sector.
The second largest sector preferred by women is the provision of healthcare and social services to the population. In this sector, 116,976 women are employed, which constitutes 16.2 percent of the total share. The top three is completed by the trade and repair of transport vehicles sector. In this field, employment contracts for 95,566 female citizens have been registered.
Regarding women's average monthly wages, the highest salary is recorded in the mining industry. In this sector, the average monthly wage for female employees is 2915 manats. The next places are occupied by financial and insurance activities. Specifically, the average monthly salary for women working in this field is 1813 manats. The top three is completed by the information and communication sector. Here, the average monthly wage for women is 1353 manats.
In the education sector, which has a large share in employment, the average monthly salary for women is 731 manats. Currently, women's average monthly wages are equivalent to 68.9 percent of men's average wages. In other words, women working in the same or similar fields earn, on average, 31.1 percent less than their male counterparts. Globally, this ratio is even lower, constituting approximately 77-80 percent.
