An investigation has been launched into the allegations made by the opposition regarding the activities of the local branch of Iran-funded Al-Mustafa International University in Georgia, including accusations of terrorism.

Modern.az reports that the State Security Service of Georgia (SSG) has released information on this matter.

"In recent days, various individuals have openly voiced a number of allegations regarding the recruitment of personnel by other countries in Georgia, including accusations or implications of terrorism. We are carefully monitoring and studying the content of these statements, as well as the motives of those who accuse Georgia in such matters, especially against the backdrop of ongoing military operations in the region," the SSG statement said.

Al-Mustafa International University is a religious and educational center located in Qom, Iran. The university specializes in Islamic studies, including theology, law, and philosophy, and has a network of branches and partner institutions in over 50 countries, including Georgia.

In 2020, the United States imposed sanctions on the university, alleging that Iran uses it to propagate its ideology and recruit foreigners for pro-Iranian armed groups. Iran denies these accusations.

According to the Georgian service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, a branch of the university has been operating in Georgia for over ten years. It offers free courses in Shia theology, Persian language, and Islamic studies, and has been active in regions with a large Muslim population, such as Gardabani and Marneuli.

This educational institution is not accredited by Georgian educational authorities, but it is reported that students can continue their education in Iran after completing local programs. Graduates interviewed by journalists stated that the university provides scholarships, housing assistance, and educational materials supplied from Iran.

The university has once again come under media scrutiny following reports that its former rector, religious and political figure Alireza Arafi, joined Iran's provisional leadership council, established to operate until a new supreme leader is elected.

Against this backdrop, Georgia's former Minister of Defense, Tina Khidasheli, stated on “Pirveli TV” that there is "a university operating illegally" in the country and called it "a school for terrorists."
