The Central Election Commission will be dissolved this month.
According to Modern.az, the term of office for election commissions in Azerbaijan is 5 years.
The last composition of the Central Election Commission was formed on April 27, 2021. Although the previous parliamentary elections were held prematurely, the new composition of the CEC was formed after the completion of the 5th year of the term of office of its previous members.
Thus, the new composition of the CEC is expected to be formed in April 2026.
It should be noted that the members of the CEC are elected by the Milli Majlis. Six members of the Commission represent the political party whose deputies constitute the majority in the Milli Majlis and submit their candidacies, six members represent deputies who do not belong to any political party (independent) and submit their candidacies, and six members represent political parties whose deputies constitute the minority in the Milli Majlis and submit their candidacies.
Currently, Mazahir Panahov chairs the CEC. He turned 75 last month.
Mazahir Panahov has been leading the institution since 2000. He served as the Head of the International Relations Department of the CEC in 1998-2000. On May 19, 2000, he was appointed a member of the CEC and elected chairman of the commission on the same day.
