In Azerbaijan, the right of a child to citizenship and to receive a name is being changed.
Modern.az reports that the issue is reflected in the "On Children's Rights" bill, which was discussed at today's plenary session of the Milli Majlis. The issue was adopted in the first reading.
According to the draft, every child's birth is registered in accordance with the Family Code after birth, and the child acquires citizenship, with the exception of cases stipulated in the first and second parts of Article 12 of the Law "On Citizenship of the Republic of Azerbaijan" (a child born in Azerbaijan whose both parents are foreign nationals, including a child whose one parent is a foreign national and the other is a stateless person, is not considered an Azerbaijani citizen).
The document emphasizes that a child will be given a name in accordance with the Family Code.
The bill also states that this will prevent the abduction, sale, and illegal displacement of children (including their return to the country of permanent residence), regardless of state purposes, forms, and methods.
It should be recalled that, according to the current law of the same name, a child is given a name with the mutual consent of their parents, or, in the absence of parents, with the consent or instruction of guardianship authorities.
The issue was put to a vote and adopted in the first reading.
