Employers will be obliged to pay equal wages to employees performing the same or equally valuable work, regardless of gender.
According to Modern.az, a draft law on amendments to the Labor Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Law "On Guarantees of Gender (Men and Women) Equality" was discussed at today's plenary session of the Milli Majlis.
According to the draft, the main goal is to ensure wage equality more precisely among individuals performing the same or equally valuable work. According to the proposed amendments, employers will be obliged to pay equal wages to employees performing the same or equally valuable work, regardless of gender.
The draft law states that work will be considered of equal value based on working conditions, the nature of the function, and the criteria stipulated in the current tariff-qualification reference books. This approach serves to implement a more objective evaluation mechanism in labor relations.
At the same time, with a new part added to the relevant article of the Labor Code, "ensuring the payment of equal wages to employees performing the same or equally valuable different work" is established as a separate principle.
The amendments to the Law "On Guarantees of Gender (Men and Women) Equality" further specify this principle. Thus, it is explicitly stated that the employer must pay equal wages for the same or equally valuable work, and in this case, working conditions and tariff-qualification characteristics are again taken as a basis.
In addition, it is proposed to remove the phrase "bonuses and other material payments made to encourage employees" from Article 9.2 of the law, which aims to define the boundaries of the wage concept more precisely.
The draft law was put to a vote and adopted in its first reading.
