One of the world's largest arms markets is facing the risk of closure.
Modern.az reports, citing foreign media, that Darrah Adamkhel, located in Pakistan, is considered one of the places where the world's largest arms markets are situated. For over a century, residents of the region have been engaged in the production and sale of firearms using skills passed down from generation to generation.
According to information, weapons produced here have been used in a number of conflicts at various times. It is reported that these weapons were particularly utilized by Afghan mujahideen against the Soviet Union, as well as by the Taliban against the Pakistani government.
Visiting Darrah is rarely possible, and usually only journalists are permitted. Nevertheless, an individual from Peshawar, through their connections, organized a visit to the region for a group of foreign nationals, accompanied by a former member of parliament.
The group traveled approximately an hour from Peshawar southwards into a mountainous area. During the visit, guests were first offered tea, and then an introduction to the region's famous arms shops and workshops was arranged.
Local residents stated that they are proud of their long-standing craftsmanship traditions. At the same time, they admitted that in recent times, due to decreasing demand and strengthening state control, the arms markets have lost their former power.
Security in the region was ensured with the participation of numerous local residents, including the former member of parliament. This indicates that engaging in arms production does not imply a propensity for violence.
Regarding prices, according to local sources, pistols cost approximately 50 dollars, while AK-47 type automatic rifles range from several hundred dollars.
