Admission to 1st grades for the Russian section is being suspended in Hədəf Lyceums operating in Baku.
According to information from Modern.az, Şəmil Sadiq, the founding director of Hədəf Lyceum, provided information about this on his social media account.
He stated that the decision will come into force starting from the new academic year.
According to Şəmil Sadiq, there are two main reasons for suspending admission to the Russian section. These are related to the decrease in demand for the Russian section and the lyceum's transition to a bilingual – Azerbaijani–English language education model.
He stated that the Russian language is not being completely abolished and will henceforth be taught as a second foreign language:
“We are redefining our priorities in education. We had stated our initial position on this last year. Our new education model is built on Azerbaijani and English languages,” he said.
The director added that no changes are foreseen for students currently studying in the Russian section:
“Existing students will continue their education based on the previous curriculum starting from the 2nd grade. The decision applies only to newly admitted 1st-grade students.”
Furthermore, another innovation was announced at the meeting.
Specifically, starting from the new academic year, students studying in the English and Russian sections in grades 2-9 will use Azerbaijani language textbooks intended for the Azerbaijani section. With this, the Azerbaijani language will be taught for 5-9 hours weekly in all sections.
