The number of foreign students studying in Azerbaijan is increasing.
According to information obtained by Modern.az from the State Statistical Committee, in the 2024–2025 academic year, 7472 foreign citizens are studying at bachelor's and master's levels in state and private higher education institutions. Of these, 1175 are citizens of CIS countries, and 6297 are citizens of other states. This indicator was 6680 last year.
Among CIS countries, the highest number of students in Azerbaijan was registered from the Russian Federation – 794 people. This is followed by 107 from Turkmenistan, 80 from Kazakhstan, 70 from Tajikistan, 57 from Ukraine, 38 from Uzbekistan, 16 from Kyrgyzstan, 8 from Belarus, and 5 from the Republic of Moldova.
In the statistics for other countries, Turkey has a clear advantage. In the 2024–2025 academic year, 3477 students from Turkey are pursuing higher education in Azerbaijan. Following them are 942 people from the Islamic Republic of Iran and 668 from Georgia.
From Asian countries, 305 from India, 180 from Pakistan, 58 from China, 19 from Bangladesh, 8 from Sri Lanka, 2 from Malaysia, 1 from Mongolia, 1 from Japan, 1 from Vietnam, 1 from Thailand, and 1 from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and South Korea are studying in Azerbaijan.
Among Middle Eastern countries, alongside Iran, 148 from Syria, 53 from Iraq, 43 from Afghanistan, 28 from Jordan, 16 from Palestine, 6 from Israel, 4 from Saudi Arabia, 3 from Kuwait, 2 from Oman, and 29 from Yemen are pursuing higher education in Azerbaijan.
The geography of students coming from the African continent is also quite extensive. 94 from Nigeria, 35 from Sudan, 29 from Egypt, 6 from Ghana, 5 from Gambia, 4 from Zimbabwe, 4 from Libya, 4 from Mozambique, 3 from Liberia, 3 from Morocco, 2 from Zambia, 2 from Somalia, 2 from Uganda, 2 from Kenya, 1 from Cameroon, 1 from Malawi, and 1 from Mauritius are included in this list.
Among European countries, 6 students from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, 5 from Germany, 3 from Bulgaria, 4 from Latvia, 2 from Lithuania, 2 from Greece, 2 from Cyprus, and 2 from the Netherlands have been registered. From the American continent, 10 from the USA, 2 from Canada, 2 from Mexico, and 1 from Colombia are pursuing higher education in Azerbaijan.
