Today – February 11 is celebrated worldwide as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
According to information obtained by Modern.az from the State Statistical Committee, a total of 14,005 scientific researchers were registered in the country at the end of 2024. Of these, 8,625 were women and 5,380 were men.
The distribution by fields, however, shows a different dynamic. The areas where women are most represented are humanitarian and natural sciences. In technical and agricultural fields, their number is relatively lower.
According to recent statistics, the number of women researchers was 2,465 in natural sciences, 1,196 in technical sciences, 1,432 in medical sciences, 364 in agricultural sciences, 1,194 in social sciences, and 1,974 in humanitarian sciences.
Share of women by scientific degrees
Although women constitute the majority among the total number of researchers, the structure by higher scientific degrees presents a different picture, with men being more numerous, especially at the Doctor of Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy levels.
The total number of individuals with a Doctor of Sciences degree is 484. Of these, 199 are women and 285 are men.
The total number of individuals with a Doctor of Philosophy degree is 3,089. In this category, 852 women and 2,237 men have been registered.
Age distribution
Among the 1,818 researchers under 30 years of age, women account for – 1,135 individuals, and men – 683 individuals.
In the 30–39 age group, out of 2,966 individuals, 2,092 are women and 874 are men.
In the 40–49 age group, out of 2,896 individuals, 2,097 are women and 799 are men.
In the 50–59 age range, out of 2,557 individuals, 1,544 are women and 1,013 are men.
In the 60–69 age group, out of 2,329 individuals, 1,229 are women and 1,100 are men.
In the 70 and above age group, out of 1,439 individuals, 528 are women and 911 are men.
At the end of 2024, there were 56 academicians in the country. Of these, 49 were men and 7 were women.
The total number of corresponding members is 85 individuals. Here too, the gender balance is in favor of men: 76 men, 9 women.
