On the coast of the Caspian Sea, near the village of Bautino in Kazakhstan's Tupkaragan district, carcasses of seals have been discovered.
Modern.az reports that the Fisheries Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan has issued a statement about this.
According to the information, the probable cause of death for more than 100 Caspian seals, included in Kazakhstan's “Red Book” and found on the seashore, is a weakened immune system and a resulting infection.
“Researchers from the Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology state that the seals have been dead for over a month, but were only recently washed ashore in the Tupkaragan district due to a western storm. Based on many years of research, the causes of seal deaths are related to a weakened immune system and the p's overall resistance, which makes them susceptible to infectious diseases”, – the ministry reported.
The committee noted that specialists continue to monitor the coastline, collect samples from animal remains where possible, and are engaged in the disposal of the carcasses.
The Caspian seal is an endemic species found only in the Caspian Sea and serves as a bioindicator for assessing the health of the marine ecosystem.
