During the USSR era, one of the territories detached from Azerbaijan by Armenia through Moscow was Nüvədi village. Until 1929, Nuvadi (Nrnadzor) village was part of Azerbaijan's Zangilan district. In 1929, there was an official decision by the Azerbaijani government regarding the transfer of Nüvədi village to Armenia's Meghri district.
Currently, work is underway towards the delimitation and demarcation of borders between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
It is precisely in the discussions held in this direction that there are those who propose bringing up the issue of Nüvədi's re-inclusion within Azerbaijan's borders as part of the Zangilan district.
In a statement to Modern.az, Ismayil Tanriverdi, director of the Center for Armenian Studies and Training at Baku State University and an Armenologist researcher, stated that Nüvədi village must absolutely be returned to Azerbaijan:
“Nüvədi has historically been a part of Azerbaijan's Zangilan district. Later, Armenians acquired this territory from Azerbaijan through Moscow by request. There are our ancient historical monuments, the graves of our ancestors. Armenians try to cover up and hide all of this, but sometimes they ask themselves, "How did Azerbaijanis - Turks - create these monuments?" According to Armenians, 46 families currently live in Nüvədi, and perhaps this figure is even lower. Armenians living in Nüvədi are dissatisfied. They cannot sell the highest quality fruits they cultivate. Armenians living there complain that no assistance is provided to them by the state. Their situation is difficu< they live on their own.”
I. Tanriverdi emphasized that Azerbaijan must set a specific condition regarding the return of Nüvədi:
“Our state must set a specific condition, stating "Nüvədi must be ours." They say that "Artvashen" (Bashkand in Gadabay - ed.) should be returned to Armenia. However, they themselves also say that since the village is completely surrounded by Turks, Armenians will never go and live there.
Nüvədi residents working in the field of history must also raise this issue, insist on it, and demand it. Our monuments, the graves of our ancestors, stand there. We must definitely return there. In my opinion, we must raise the issue at the state level. That issue must absolutely be resolved in our favor, otherwise we will lose.”
