Following the assassination of Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, discussions are underway regarding who will be appointed in his place.
Modern.az reports that foreign media, citing sources in Iran, have disseminated information that Saeed Jalili will be appointed to the post of Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.
Saeed Jalili leads the radical conservative political party "Jebhe-ye Paydari".
He previously served as the Secretary-General of the Supreme National Security Council.
Jalili currently serves as the Supreme Leader's representative in the Supreme National Security Council. He was appointed to that position by the late leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Saeed Jalili was a rival to Masoud Pezeshkian in the second round of the recent presidential elections.
In the elections, Masoud Pezeshkian garnered 16,384,403 votes; Saeed Jalili received 13,538,179 votes.
He also chaired Iran's nuclear negotiations group.
According to some reports, Saeed Jalili has Azerbaijani heritage on his mother's side. It is claimed that Saeed Jalili's mother is originally from the Ardabil region.
Saeed Jalili participated in the Iran-Iraq War, was wounded in Operation Karbala-5, and had his leg amputated.
