Today marks the 102nd anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Turkey.

Modern.az reminds that after the liberation of Anatolian lands from occupation, under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey declared the establishment of the Republic on October 29, 1923.

With this decision, the Turkish nation opened a new page in its history, and the principle “Sovereignty unconditionally belongs to the nation” became the foundation of state governance.

With the Treaty of Lausanne signed in July 1923, the international recognition of the new Turkish state was ensured. On October 13, Ankara was declared the official capital of Turkey. This created the necessity for a clear definition of the state's system of governance.

On October 28, 1923, Mustafa Kemal gathered his close comrades at Çankaya Mansion, and the Republic was declared the next day.

On the same day, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was elected the first president of Turkey through a secret ballot.

On October 29, 1924, official holiday celebrations were held for the first time. With the law adopted on February 2, 1925, October 29 was declared a “national holiday”. Since then, the people of Turkey celebrate this day with enthusiasm every year.

The Republic of Turkey continues to adhere to Atatürk's principle of “sovereignty belongs to the nation” and progresses on the path of modernity and democracy.
