Democrat-socialist Zohran Mamdani has won the New York mayoral election.
Modern.az reports that US television channels CBS and CNN have stated, based on preliminary results, that he will be the city's next mayor.
The 34-year-old politician will assume this position as New York's youngest mayor in over 100 years, and also as the first Muslim in the city's history.
Alongside Mamdani, independent candidate, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa also participated in the elections. Cuomo has already congratulated Mamdani on his victory.
Donald Trump opposed Mamdani on the eve of the election, calling him a “communist.”
According to analysts, Mamdani's victory symbolizes the rise of a new generation of politicians for the US Democratic Party. He has presented himself as a proponent of social justice, government support, and equal economic opportunities.
Experts note that the main challenge for Mamdani begins now. He will have to govern a colossal city like New York amidst high expectations and a limited budget.
