The first batch of Russian wheat has been delivered to Armenia via railway, passing through the territory of Azerbaijan.
Modern.az reports that this was announced by Armenia's Minister of Economy, Gevorg Papoyan.
According to the minister, Russian wheat was usually brought to Armenia via the “Upper Lars” checkpoint located on the border with Georgia, but that route experienced queues and transport problems.
“This time, the cargo entered Azerbaijan from Russian territory, then proceeded to Georgia, and was delivered to Armenia from Georgia,” Papoyan stated.
The minister added that in the coming days, a batch of Kazakh wheat will also be brought to Armenia via Azerbaijan. According to Armenian media reports, the wheat batches (of Russian and Kazakh origin), with a total volume of 1000 tons, belong to the company of Armenian businessman Samvel Aleksanyan.
The Russian Ministry of Agriculture stated that the development of this route creates new opportunities for increasing wheat exports to the South Caucasus countries. According to the ministry, Armenia imports approximately 450–500 thousand tons of grain annually, and almost 100% of it comes from Russia. The new railway route provides an opportunity to reduce transport costs and ensure stability of supply.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk called the event “a real and tangible contribution to the establishment of peace in the South Caucasus”:
“I express my gratitude to the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Shahin Mustafayev, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Mher Grigoryan, and the Government of Georgia for their constructive cooperation in organizing this route.”
According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, an additional 132 wagons of wheat will be sent to Armenia via Azerbaijan by the end of January 2026.
