In Turkey, the population growth rate is decreasing, and the birth rate is at a disastrous level of 1.48. The nation is aging. Alarm bells are ringing for the future of the country.
Modern.az reports that these words were spoken by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan while addressing participants of a symposium on family and culture held at the “Beştepe” scientific library in Ankara.
The head of state expressed regret that modern society prioritizes individualism, which increasingly isolates people.
“By studying the institution of the family, we understand the boundaries of the nation, and by analyzing the people, we deeply learn about the culture they create,” said the Turkish leader, calling the family a “school of upbringing and life.”
The President noted that by the end of 2024, the average age of marriage in Turkey was 25.8 for women and 28.3 for men.
“According to statistics, one-third of divorces in Turkey occur within the first five years of marriage. While in 2008, an average of four people lived in families in our country, this figure dropped to 3.11 at the beginning of this year,” the President stated. He also announced that the Turkish government has declared the next 10 years as the “Family and Population Decade.”
In this regard, President Erdoğan announced plans to provide more active support to young families. “Payments for young citizens getting married, as well as for childbirth, will increase starting from 2026,” the politician declared.
