For the first time in the country's history, a woman has been appointed to the position of army commander in Australia.

Modern.az reports, citing foreign media, that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that for the first time, a woman - Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, who currently serves as the chief of joint forces - will lead the country's army starting from July.

According to the Australian Prime Minister, she will replace Lieutenant General Simon Stuart in this post, starting her tenure as the chief of land forces.

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles called S. Coyle's appointment a deeply historic moment. According to him, this decision will be of great importance for both women already serving in the Australian Defense Force and those considering such an opportunity in the future.

It is noted that this appointment comes amid efforts by the Australian armed forces to increase the number of female officers, as well as accusations of systematic sexual harassment and discrimination in the army. ("Reuters")
