"Qarabağ" FK has advanced to the Champions League play-off round. The Aghdam club is in 22nd place with 10 points. Our team will face "Newcastle" in the 1/16 round. The first match will take place on February 18 in Baku at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium, and the return leg will be held on February 24 in England.
If “The Galloping Horses” advance past this round, they will face “Barcelona” (Spain) or “Chelsea” (England) in the 1/8 final round.
Modern.az has investigated how much funding the Aghdam club will receive if it advances to the 1/8 final round.
According to the financial mechanism implemented by UEFA, clubs are paid a separate bonus for each victory in the Champions League. For the current season, this amount is approximately 2.1 million euros. The aforementioned funds apply to every victory achieved, regardless of the stage, be it the group stage or the play-off round. In this regard, “Qarabağ”'s potential victory over “Newcastle” means an immediately measurable financial income for the club.
The main financial increase is related to the stage bonus. A separate prize is provided for each club that advances to the 1/8 final of the UEFA Champions League. According to the official financial distribution of recent seasons, this figure is approximately 10–11 million euros. This payment stems not from the result of a specific match, but from the fact of qualifying for the next stage of the tournament.
Thus, if “Qarabağ” FK wins against “Newcastle” and advances to the 1/8 final, the club will receive a total of 12 million euros in additional income solely from this one match and stage. This amount does not include participation bonuses given for the main stage of the Champions League, television broadcasting rights, as well as UEFA ranking and country coefficient-based “value pillar” payments.
