Today marks another anniversary of the downing of the "Mi-8" helicopter, carrying Azerbaijani officials on board, by Armenian armed groups over Qarakənd village in Khojavand district. Khojavand is now liberated. Precisely for this reason, the issue of erecting a monument in the area where the tragedy occurred has come to the fore.
In a statement to Modern.az, Milli Majlis deputy Elman Məmmədov stated that a monument, a sign commemorating the event, must absolutely be erected at the site where the helicopter was shot down:
"It should be noted why the monument is being erected and what it commemorates. We say that a peace agreement will be signed, relations will be established, borders will be opened. Very good, these should happen. There are no eternal wars in the world. Every war ends with peace. However, the heinous crimes committed against us by these vile individuals, our enemies, with their patrons, must never be forgotten. They must be passed down from generation to generation. We must know that we cannot trust them or let our guard down".
In connection with the matter, we also contacted the press service of the Restoration, Construction, and Management Service in Aghdam, Fuzuli, and Khojavand districts.
The Service's press secretary, Leyla Sarabi, stated in response to our inquiry that there is currently no information regarding the erection of any monument or the construction of a memorial in the area due to the Qarakənd tragedy.
