Consecutive underground tremors have been recorded in Shamakhi district over the past two days. According to information from the Republican Seismological Survey Center under the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, the earthquakes mainly occurred 23 kilometers southwest of Pirgulu station. The magnitude of the tremors varied between 3–3.8, and the depth of the earthquake hypocenter was 8–13 kilometers. Although in some cases the underground tremors were felt up to 3 points at the epicenter and in nearby settlements, a number of earthquakes were not felt. Thus, the number of earthquakes that occurred in the district over two days has reached eight.
Gurban Yetirmishli, Director General of the Republican Seismological Survey Center (RSSC) under the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), told Modern.az that aftershocks will continue:
“The process must continue until it drops to the background level. Tonight, just before four o'clock, a tremor with a magnitude of 4.7 began, followed by another tremor of 6.7.”
Q. Yetirmishli noted that the tremors are a chain reaction of the earthquakes that have occurred:
“Wherever tension has accumulated along the tectonic fault, time is needed for its release. There is no probability of earthquakes occurring in other districts of the republic. Generally, there is no probability of a strong earthquake. Such minor tremors are not dangerous; they can occur.”
Gurban Yetirmishli also noted that the number of low-level tremors in Shamakhi has exceeded 200 from yesterday to today.
