The problem of the absence of a sewage line persists in many villages and settlements located around Baku. The population uses alternative means – mainly cesspools.
Elnur Azadov, an expert on property issues, told Modern.az that there are quite a lot of such villages and settlements around Baku:
“There are so many that it would not be logical to name them all one by one. It can be said that: settlements existing since the Soviet era have a sewage line, but in areas formed after independence, the supply is at a very low level”.
The expert noted that areas that received city status should have had a sewage system:
“An area like Khirdalan, which received city status, should have had sewage. However, the territory of Khirdalan is growing. The issue lies in the supply to expanded areas. Let's look at Zabrat settlement. It exists in the center. When we go 2 kilometers deep, we see that there is no sewage”.
According to Elnur Azadov, almost no sewage lines have been laid in the lands formed through municipal lines after the 2000s:
“This situation is acute in newly established settlements over the last 25 years. The current situation is also not suitable from an ecological point of view”.
In response to our website's inquiry regarding the issue, the United Water Supply Service of Large Cities, which is part of the State Agency for Water Resources of Azerbaijan (ADSEA), stated that the implementation of large-scale projects aimed at the efficient management of water resources, sustainable drinking water supply to the population, and the safe transportation of wastewater and rainwater is continuing.
It was noted by the agency that currently, construction and development works for projects aimed at establishing and renovating drinking water supply and sewage systems in the capital and surrounding areas, as well as in other regions, are being carried out according to plan.
It was reported that projects for the construction of new sewage collectors and wastewater treatment plants for wastewater in Baku city and Absheron district have been initiated.
In areas where water and sewage supply are not available, relevant project documents have been prepared for the purpose of establishing networks at the request of ADSEA. The implementation of projects is carried out taking into account the existence of the network, its technical condition, and other factors. The construction of the wastewater network in settlements, including the aforementioned address, is also being carried out in stages in accordance with the action plan.
Currently, construction and development works are being carried out for the establishment of the main sewage collectors for the Pirshagi basin, the Darnagul–Bakikhanov–Garachukhur–Hovsan sewage collector, the main sewage collector and wastewater treatment plant for the Lokbatan basin, the main sewage collector and wastewater treatment plant for the Mushfigabad basin, the Sahil collector, the main sewage collector and wastewater treatment plant for the Boyukshor basin, as well as the Zigh–Hovsan sewage collector.
