Azerbaijan does not demand changes to the Armenian Constitution during negotiations, but has warned that it will not sign a peace agreement if the current provisions remain.

Modern.az reports that this was stated by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan on Monday at a meeting of the parliamentary foreign relations committee.

According to him, the President of Azerbaijan does not demand that Armenia change its Constitution during negotiations.

"I want to assure you that Azerbaijan does not demand changes to the Armenian Constitution. But there is another matter, and they state it openly. They say that as long as such a phrase (territorial claim against Azerbaijan - the unification of Karabakh with Armenia - ed.) exists in your Constitution, we do not plan to sign a peace agreement," Mirzoyan stated.

According to him, the Armenian side has taken this position into account.

Some time ago, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called the country's Declaration of Independence a threat.

He stated that there would be no references to the Declaration of Independence in the new Constitution, as, in his opinion, this creates a risk of conflict. Specifically, one of the provisions of the Declaration envisages the unification of Armenia with “Nagorno-Karabakh,” which is against Azerbaijan's interests.
