The situation in Mali, located in West Africa, has reached a critical point.

According to Modern.az, “The Wall Street Journal” reports that armed groups linked to the “Al-Qaeda” terrorist network are advancing towards the capital Bamako, and there is a threat of the city being captured.

According to the publication, if Bamako is captured, Mali will be the first country to be governed by a group recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States.

According to reports, an armed group named “Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin” (JNIM), considered the official branch of “Al-Qaeda” in Mali, has launched large-scale attacks against government forces. They have cut off the capital's fuel and food supplies, resulting in severe shortages and price increases in the country. In Bamako, fuel prices have tripled, and schools and universities have been closed.

According to experts, the militants are attempting to replicate the strategy employed by the “Taliban” in Afghanistan, using a “war of attrition” tactic, meaning they aim to weaken the government from within and force it to surrender

Amidst the escalating situation, US authorities have urged their citizens to leave the country immediately and have begun a partial evacuation of embassy staff.

It should be recalled that power in Mali was seized by the army in 2021 as a result of a military coup.
