Scientists at Flinders University have found a link between daily coffee consumption and bone density in their research.

Modern.az reports that the results of the study were published in the journal “Nutrients”.

Researchers tracked the health indicators of approximately 10,000 women over the age of 65 for 10 years. Their coffee and tea consumption and bone mineral density in the hip area were regularly evaluated.

According to the results, drinking approximately 2-3 cups of coffee per day was not associated with a decrease in bone density. However, women who consumed more than 5 cups of coffee every day were observed to have lower bone mineral density.

In women who drank tea, bone density in the hip area was found to be slightly higher compared to those who did not consume tea. Scientists attribute this to the catechins in tea. These natural compounds are thought to help form bone tissue and slow its breakdown.

Researchers suggest that caffeine may play a role in the effect of coffee. Although laboratory studies show that caffeine can affect calcium absorption and bone metabolism, it is noted that this effect is not significant.

Scientists emphasize that the results of the study do not prove that coffee directly causes a decrease in bone density. A statistical association was simply found between high coffee consumption and bone mineral density.

According to experts, moderate coffee consumption may not pose a serious threat to bone health, but it is advisable to avoid very high daily coffee intake. In the prevention of osteoporosis, adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, physical activity, and other proven measures to maintain bone health remain essential.
