The European Union is discussing who will conduct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Ukrainian issue.

Modern.az reports that, according to Politico, European officials want to appoint a single representative authorized to speak with Moscow on behalf of all member countries.

Discussions in this direction intensified after the visit of US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to Russia. Europe is concerned that Washington might reach an agreement with Moscow on unfavorable terms for Kyiv without their participation.

Among the candidates mentioned are European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.

Some diplomats, however, consider Finnish President Alexander Stubb a more suitable candidate. They justify this by Stubb's good relations with Trump and his experience in contacts with Russia.
